Horst and McCann offers an excellent NRA First Steps program of firearms instruction for the new firearms enthusiast. Join us for an enjoyable morning or evening of instruction which provides a terrific, no pressure, non-intimidating introduction to the world of firearms. Whether you are interested in learning about firearms for personal or home defense, target shooting, or just wanted to satisfy your curiosity about firearms and shooting, we will ensure that your day or evening spent with us will be both entertaining and enlightening.

 

Our course covers the following key components:

 

  • safe handling of firearms
  • Identification of various firearm parts and operation
  •  ammunition identification and function
  • shooting fundamentals with actual firing on the range

(Note-this course qualifies participants to purchase handguns and regulated firearms in the state of Maryland)

 

Course fee is $80; 15 rounds of ammunition, target, range time and any firearm rental is included.

This course is intended for the firearms enthusiast who would like to delve more deeply into the handgun shooting sports. This course more intensely focuses on marksmanship and firearms safety. Concepts covered include the following:

II. Handgun Parts and their Function
a.) Ammunition
III. Firearms Handling
a.) Loading and Unloading
b.) Trigger Control
c.) Grip
d.) Sight Picture
e.) Stance
f.) Dry Firing Drills
IV. Combining Basic Shooting Fundamentals (Live Fire/Range)
a.) Sight Picture and Sight Alignment
b.) Grip
c.) Stance
d.) Trigger Pull
V. Understanding Marksmanship
a.) Common Errors
b.) Target Analysis
VI. Cleaning, Storage and Maintenance
a.) Field stripping and proper cleaning
b.) Storing

Course is 3 hours in length. Student will fire a total of 100 rounds of ammunition. Additionally, student will field strip and clean either their own handgun or the firearm selected by the student from the Horst and McCann rental inventory under instructor supervision.
